A man goes to an enlightened saint and says “I am tired of the rat race”. The saint replies there are 2 important aspects here — 1) race and 2) rat, let’s discuss each one. He says that the race is a part of life. Survival of the fittest is nature’s law, and it is equally applicable to animals and humans. You have to live, provide for yourself and your dependents. It would be irresponsible of you to abandon the race, and not provide for yourself and your family.

So, you will have to enter the race.

Coming to the rat part, here is where you have a choice. You can choose to be a rat, or you can choose to be human. Rats are dishonest cowards who steal, hide and even kill their own to satisfy their hunger. You can choose to be human — honest, kind, generous and still run the race.

The man said “But, I will still be surrounded by rats”. The saint replied “The lotus blooms in spite of all the dirt around it, and so will you”.

Here’s a funny question for you — Are you a rat or a human in the “race”?
