I hailed a cab at the airport, and the porter standing near me said “That’s a lady driver, don’t take that cab”. Then he pointed me to a cab with a male driver.
Had I heeded his advice, I would be witnessing a competent lady lose an opportunity simply because she was a woman. She would never even know that this opportunity was snatched away from her within split seconds.
Once again, I saw the “bias” doing its damage. It’s a regular visitor anyway. I keep bumping into it.
Yet I am hopeful!
My heart leaps with joy when I see lady attenders at petrol bunks. It also leaps with joy when I see lady CEOs, judges and presidents. Though the demolition of the “bias” in the lower socio-economic strata moves me more. That’s where breaking the bias can remove a lot of suffering for women.
It can lift them out of the vicious cycle of poverty, abuse and oppression. It gives them financial independence, and the power to make their own decisions. It gives them the courage to walk out of abusive relationships, free from manipulation and deceit. It helps them reclaim their right over their own body. It gives them hope for a brighter future.
And it gives them a better life!
These very women will also be the future mothers of many lady CEOs, judges and presidents. As they break biases and birth a better life for themselves, just the same, they will give birth to women who are capable of leading organizations and countries. Women who will make the world a better place to live, and lead us forward.
Keep smashing the bias!
